Problem Solving Lab: Finding the Thickness of Copper Foil
Purpose: To determine the thickness of a piece of Cu foil without directly measuring it.
Materials allowed: copper foil(rectangular-shaped), balance, ruler
Hint: You’ll need to use one of copper’s characteristic properties:
melting point = 1083
oC
density = 8.96g/cm3.
Conductivity = 0.94 mW-1
Requirements for Report: In your report, write your procedure, record your data in a table, include the reasoning and show your calculations in the analysis, and write a conclusion.
Make sure you measure to two decimal places (ruler)
Balance: use 1 decimal place regardless of digit after the deimal
Sample Measurements

Width(cm) |

Mass(g) |
2.70.1 |
Constant Density of Cu 8.96 g/cm3
Calculations A = lw = 7.50 X 3.24 = 24.3 cm2
V = m/d = 2.7/8.96 = 0.301 cm3
Thickness = V/A = 0.301 cm3/24.3 cm2 = 0.124 0.006
Errors 0.02/7.5 + 0.02/3.24 +0.1/2.7 = 0.046 = 4.6%
0.046*0.124 = 0.006
