Ice Sticks?!

The above is not a trick picture. If you quickly take an ice cube out of the freezer and press a butter knife against it ( sometimes casual contact is all that's required), the ice remains stuck to the knife. Why?
Melting is an endothermic process, meaning that it absorbs energy from the environment. In this case,as it begins to melt, the ice removes energy from the stainless steel knife. Stainless steel, like most metals, has a low specific heat, which in this context means that it loses its heat very easily to the melting ice. As a result, the knife actually cools enough to freeze the thin layer of water between the knife and the ice, binding the knife to the suspended ice cube.
