Guidance Counselling

The guidance department is committed to helping our students in their academic, social or emotional well-being. Our guidance counsellor assists students in making choices about their future by informing students about CEGEP, vocational, professional programs and career possibilities.  She plays a key role in crisis intervention and support students undergoing a difficult or traumatic period. Part-time youth and addictions counsellors work collaboratively with the guidance counsellor to promote healthy lifestyles and prevention. LaurenHill Academy has Guidance Counsellors at the Junior Campus and the Senior Campus. The Guidance Counsellors are available to provide educational, vocational and personal counselling services for all students.

Caretaking Services

School caretakers and maintenance workers are responsible for the cleaning and general maintenance of the school building and grounds, providing a clean and safe environment for students and staff.

For electrical or plumbing work, a specialist is provided to the school by the school board.

Computer Lab Technician

The computer lab technician assists teachers and students with computer related activities and programs. In conjunction with the teacher, He or she also ensures that students respect safety and privacy rules when in the computer lab.

Library Services

School libraries enrich and support the educational program of the school and provide a wide range of materials, with diversity of appeal and different points of view.

The role of the school librarian (Documentation Technician) is to provide assistance to students and staff in regard to research and use of the library facilities. He or she also manages the classification system, document conservation and disposal.

Student Supervision

The school provides supervision on school grounds during lunchtime, in-between classes and during breaks to ensure that rules are observed and that students are safe.

Special Education Technician

The special education technician applies techniques and methods in keeping with an individualized education plan intended for special needs students, students with social maladjustments or learning difficulties in keeping with a program designed for students requiring specific support.

Homework Program

Senior Homework Program

This program is offered free of charge to students. Admission is based on teacher referrals and is in addition to the remediation sessions offered by teachers.

Junior Homework Program

The junior campus after school homework program is a free service offered to all Junior Campus students. Students are expected to attend regularly.  The program runs from Monday to Wednesday from 3:15 to 4:15. The program is staffed by teachers, tutors, and resource team members.

OBJECTIVE

  • Provide additional academic assistance to students who need it, with a focus on those students who are a part of the Resource Team’s domain.  
  • Provide a quiet and structured environment for learning, remediation, test completion and homework.
  • Ensure quality tutors are hired and utilized throughout the year for the benefit of every learning style and curriculum requirement.  IE. Math specialist, French specialist, etc.

A good learning environment is crucial to the success of the students in the program. Therefore, any disruptive student will be removed from the program.

Computer Technician

The computer technician (ITS Field Services Technician) installs new computer applications, troubleshoots network connectivity, repairs complicated breakdowns and assists analysts in the development and implementation of new computer systems within the school.

Nutritional Education

Dietitians travel from school to school visiting classrooms and cafeterias to talk to students about eating nutritious foods and being healthy. The aim is to encourage healthy lifestyles through good nutrition and physical activity and to sensitize students to the social influences on their perception of health and well-being. Occupational Therapy

The occupational therapist works with parents and/or caregivers and others to assess if a student has difficulties with practical and social skills and recommends appropriate strategies in order to maximise the student's potential when carrying out activities of daily living.

Speech and Language Therapy

A speech and language pathologist is available to evaluate, diagnose and treat students with a variety of problems including articulation language delays, learning disabilities, stuttering, and speech disorders.

Spiritual and Community Involvement

The spiritual community animator develops and implements programs or activities of a community, humanitarian, spiritual and religious nature. He or She also provides information and guidance to staff, parents, and students with respect to religious beliefs and needs in terms of spiritual life and community involvement.

The Oasis (Spiritual Animator)

The word “Oasis” is a place to give the entire school community support, quiet, relaxing times and calls to reach out to help others.

Chinese New Year, Spirituality of Sexuality, St Valentine’s Day, Festival of Lights, Remembrance Day, Wheel of Fortune (Outreach to street people and poor families), “Spirit of Giving” and “Tea for Toys”, Meditation, Values, the 7 major faiths, Global warming, Armenian Genocide and Chess tournaments are just some of the topics, activities and outreach which are animated by the Spiritual Community Animator each year.

Registered Nurse

A school nurse is available to the students to provide information regarding health matters and to deal with serious health problems. The school is not responsible for accidents. It is essential that parents inform the school in writing of any medical problems that might affect your child's participation in school life.

Social Worker

A social worker is assigned to the school on a part-time basis. The role of the social worker is particularly important in the area of family intervention or counselling.

Through individual, family or group counselling, the school social worker can focus on issues that affect an adolescent’s well-being, behaviour and academic performance. This could include such issues as mourning the loss of a loved one, interpersonal conflicts, family communication and child protection.
